South Dakota State University is the state’s largest, most comprehensive higher-education university with over $94 million annual research expenditures, more than 200 academic programs and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students.
South Dakota State University is a land-grant institution that offers a rich academic experience through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world.
Company History
Founded in 1881, before South Dakota became a state in 1889, the land-grant college was established on 80 acres of land purchased by residents of Dakota Territory. The first building was completed in 1884.
By fall term 1885, classes began at The Agricultural College of the Dakota Territory with 62 students. With statehood in 1889, the Brookings school officially became a land-grant college. Its name was changed to Dakota Agricultural College and it had 252 students. Later that year, the name was officially changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Its common name was State College.
By 1964 the growing school had grown to a university with six academic divisions. State College officially became South Dakota State University July 1, 1964. Today, the university confers degrees from seven colleges representing more than 230 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 39 master’s degree programs, 16 Ph.D. and two professional programs.
In addition to the Brookings campus, the work of the university is carried out at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across the state.
