The College of Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to join the team at IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering. The individual in this role will perform research, conduct experiments, analyze data, prepare reports, contribute to manuscripts, manage projects, maintain equipment, supervise students, and work with external clients for the Iowa Wastewater and Waste to Energy Research Program (IWWERP).

  • Perform research activities in wastewater treatment and waste to energy processes such as anaerobic digestion.
  • Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with the principal investigator.

Conduct Experiments

  • Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of experiment protocols.
  • Test and evaluate current procedures in wastewater treatment and waste to energy processes.

Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications

  • May perform statistical analysis of data.
  •  Assist in preparing publications and presentations.

Administrative and Project Management

  • Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data.
  • Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation.

Facilities and Equipment Management

  • Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.
  • Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.


  • Provide training on basic lab techniques and protocols.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, analytical chemistry, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • At least two years of relevant experience with using, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation utilized in wastewater treatment and waste to energy processes research.
  • 1-3 years’ experience using wastewater treatment and waste to energy processes research methodologies, tools, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations concerning the operation of research laboratories and treatment facilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse teams.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with BioWin computational modeling software.
  • Experience operating a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Experience with anaerobic digestion for renewal natural gas production.
  • Professional engineering license.
