EMPLOYMENT LEVEL: Director of Technology
SALARY RANGE: $80,000 - $110,000 (depending upon depth of qualifications)
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Superintendent
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Technology is responsible for leading and managing the district’s technology infrastructure, policies, and services to support student learning, administrative operations, and future growth. This role oversees the planning, implementation, and maintenance of all technology systems, including data collection, processing, reporting, network infrastructure, security, hardware and software. Additionally, the Director collaborates with district leadership to align technology initiatives with educational and operational goals, ensuring seamless integration across schools and departments.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Higher education in Education, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Job experience of at least five years in a leadership role in the technology field is expected with experience in Education preferred.
- Industry certifications (e.g., ITIL, CISSP, Microsoft) are a plus.
- Strong leadership in developing and sharing vision, conflict resolution, and fostering a positive workplace culture.
- Ability to anticipate trends in educational technology and lead effective change.
- Experience in budget planning, resource allocation, and cost-effective technology implementation.
- Knowledge of technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, data management, and IT service management.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Leadership & Strategy
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the Information Technology (IT) department staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, professional growth, accountability and customer service.
- Develop and implement long-term technology plan in collaboration with district leadership and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with educational and operational goals while addressing evolving technology needs.
- Engage district leaders, school administrators, educators, and end users in decision-making processes to ensure that technology solutions effectively support teaching, learning, and operational needs.
- Promote and encourage a customer service-oriented culture within the IT department, ensuring responsive, efficient, and user-friendly support for all district staff and students.
- Technology Infrastructure & Support
- Oversee district-wide network management, cybersecurity, and IT service delivery.
- Direct the evaluation, acquisition, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems.
- Ensure the security and integrity of district data and technology infrastructure.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends to make data-driven recommendations that enhance district-wide technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital learning experiences.
- Collaboration & Training
- Work closely with district and school administrators to assess technology needs.
- Provide training and support for staff, fostering digital literacy and effective technology use.
- Facilitate the Mentors in Technology program to support staff development.
- Facilities & Operations

- Coordinate technology integration in new construction and renovation projects.
- Oversee daily IT operations, ensuring responsive and effective technical support.
- Develop and maintain documentation for network configurations and district technology policies.
Additional Duties
Attend relevant committee meetings, state-level conferences, and industry events.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or district leadership.
Budget and Resources
o Develop and manage the district’s IT budget, ensuring strategic allocation of resources for technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, hardware, software, and instructional technology.
o Collaborate with district leadership to forecast technology expenses, assess cost-saving opportunities, and ensure financial sustainability of IT projects.
o Oversee procurement processes, ensuring cost-effective purchasing, contract negotiation, and lifecycle management for IT assets.
o Support the business office to provide financial reporting on technology spending, funding utilization, and return on investment to school board members and district stakeholders.
Compliance
Ensure compliance with federal and state laws related to technology, data privacy, and accessibility.
Oversee the district’s E-Rate program, ensuring compliance with FCC regulations and maximizing funding for eligible technology and network infrastructure projects.
Manage the E-Rate application process, including Form 470, Form 471, and Form 486, in coordination with finance and procurement teams.
Maintain accurate records and documentation for Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) audits and compliance reviews.
Work with vendors and service providers to secure cost-effective, E-Rate-compliant contracts for internet access, network infrastructure, and telecommunications services.
Stay informed on E-Rate policy updates, Category One and Category Two funding, and federal technology funding opportunities.
Tech Competencies and Skill Sets
The following competencies would be helpful in stepping into the technology department’s infrastructure. We are a Microsoft District.

- Active Directory: User and group management, Group Policy Objects (GPO), domain services
- Microsoft 365 Administration: Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, licensing and compliance
- Windows Server & Client Environments: Deployment, patching, imaging, and troubleshooting. SCCM, WDS or Intune experience helpful
- Virtual Server Environment: Microsoft Hyper-V
- Network Infrastructure: VLANs, firewalls, wireless access points, and switch configuration with Cisco and Aruba devices
- Cybersecurity Practices: Endpoint protection, threat detection, incident response, and compliance
- Data Systems: Skyward Qmlative, ClassLink, Canvas and integration with state reporting tools
- Backup & Disaster Recovery: Planning, implementation, and testing of recovery procedures using Veeam software
- Cloud Services: Azure AD, Intune, Defender, and cloud-based identity and device management
- Help Desk Tools: Ticketing systems, asset tracking, and service delivery metrics using osTicket, IncidentIQ, and Follett Destiny
- Apple iPads: Management with Jamf
- Security Administrator: Manage security for all major software and hardware instances across the district for users and devices
- Google Workspace Administrator: Minimal deployment of Google licensing and devices in district
- Facilities Technology & Integrated Systems: Door, lighting, video surveillance, HVAC support and physical security systems
